One of the many moments in Irish history which filled me with pride occurred over the weekend.
“I think this is a moment that re-brands Ireland to a lot of folks around the world as a country not stuck in tradition but that has an inclusive tradition,”
Ty Cobb, the international director of the Human Rights Campaign.
I was glued to Social Media on Friday evening. Twitter was alight with people helping each other find replacements for cancelled flights and offering lifts to polling stations. It was incredible to watch. #hometovote was trending globally. The sheer effort many people made to return to Ireland to cast their vote was astonishing. From what I could tell, it seemed every flight into Ireland on the Friday was full with people returning from near and far.
We now know the result, but for me it was how we got to that result that will leave the lasting impression.
